• Over 32.46 crore travel facilities utilized by women beneficiaries statewide

In a significant move towards enhancing women’s empowerment, the Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has surpassed the Rs. 1,548 crore mark in providing free travel facilities for women across the state.
Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar revealed today that, over the past 28 months, the Mann government has invested Rs. 1,548.25 crore in offering free travel on Punjab Roadways/Punbus and PRTC buses for women. “This transformative policy has enabled an impressive 32.46 crore journeys, greatly improving mobility and access to opportunities for women throughout Punjab,” Bhullar stated.

Providing a year-wise breakdown, the Cabinet Minister noted that from March 2022 to March 2023, Rs. 664.63 crore was spent, benefiting 14.29 crore journeys for women. In the financial year 2023-2024, Rs. 694.64 crore was allocated, facilitating 14.90 crore trips. In the current financial year, up to July 15, 2024, Rs. 188.98 crore has been spent, enabling 3.27 crore journeys for women.
“This groundbreaking scheme is a fundamental part of the Mann government’s comprehensive approach to social welfare and gender equality,” said Bhullar. He emphasized that by eliminating financial barriers to transportation, this initiative empowers women to access education, employment, healthcare, and other essential services with greater ease. “Our government understands that genuine progress is inclusive. This free travel scheme is not just about transportation; it’s about dignity, independence, and broadening opportunities for every woman in Punjab,” he added.
The Transport Minister concluded that this initiative exemplifies the Mann government’s vision for a progressive and equitable Punjab, where every citizen, regardless of gender, can thrive and contribute to the state’s growth and prosperity.
