Renowned actor Mithun Chakraborty is poised to receive the esteemed Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year. Union Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting, Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, made the announcement on the social media platform X (previously known as Twitter). The award presentation will take place at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8, 2024.
The minister conveyed that Mithun Chakraborty, affectionately called Mithun Da, is being acknowledged for his incredible cinematic journey and significant contributions to Indian cinema. In his post, Vaishnaw underscored that Mithun Da’s extensive body of work has inspired many generations and continues to make a lasting impact on the film industry.

Mithun Chakraborty boasts a distinguished career that spans several decades and encompasses over 350 films in various languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Odia, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Punjabi. He was among the highest-earning actors during the 1980s and early 1990s, and notably, he was the only actor to secure the National Film Award for Best Actor for his debut performance.
Throughout his career, he has garnered numerous honors, including two additional National Awards for his performances in Tahader Katha (1993) and Swami Vivekananda (1996). Earlier this year, in April 2024, he was also awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of the highest civilian honors in India.
Mithun Chakraborty’s distinctive dance style, which fuses disco with traditional elements, captivated audiences and turned him into a cultural icon. This Dadasaheb Phalke Award further solidifies his status as one of the most significant figures in Indian cinema.
