National Lok Adalat Held Across Punjab: Over 3.76 Lakh Cases Taken Up by 366 Benches

Lok Adalat Concept: A Way Forward Towards Amicable Settlement of Disputes

Chandigarh, September 14

In an effort to reduce the backlog of pending litigation and promote amicable settlements, the Punjab State Legal Services Authority, under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority, organized a National Lok Adalat on September 14, 2024, across Punjab. This initiative, led by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia, Judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court and Executive Chairman of the State Authority, aimed to effectively resolve disputes throughout the state.

During this National Lok Adalat, 366 Lok Adalat benches were constituted in 22 districts, handling over 3,76,000 cases for settlement. Lok Adalats are a crucial effort by Legal Services Authorities to reduce the burden of pending litigation and encourage pre-litigative settlements. These proceedings offer a faster and more cost-effective alternative to traditional litigation.

The benefits of Lok Adalats are numerous. They save time and reduce financial burdens on litigants as court fees are refunded in settled cases. Moreover, since settlements are reached with the consent of both parties, there is no option for appeal, making decisions final and binding. Ultimately, both parties benefit from a win-win situation.

The Member Secretary of the Punjab State Legal Services Authority also informed that the Free Legal Aid Helpline Number 15100 is functional 24/7 throughout Punjab. This service aims to provide free legal assistance to the public. The Member Secretary further emphasized the authority’s dedication to resolving as many disputes as possible through Lok Adalats.
