Punjab Government Takes Another Step Toward Welfare of Disabled Employees, Ensuring Barrier-Free Work Environment

In a significant move to address the challenges faced by disabled employees, the Punjab Government has announced a landmark decision to enhance their workplace convenience. Dr. Baljit Kaur, Minister for Social Security, Women, and Child Development, revealed that clear instructions have been issued to all heads of government departments to exempt visually impaired and mobility-impaired disabled employees from night duty assignments.
Providing further details, Dr. Baljit Kaur explained that the issue was raised during recent meetings with associations representing disabled employees. They highlighted the significant challenges faced by visually impaired and mobility-impaired employees during night shifts, including safety concerns and transportation difficulties. The decision to exempt them from night duties was made with humanitarian considerations and the welfare of these employees in mind.
Dr. Kaur emphasized that under Sections 3 and 20 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, guidelines have already been issued to create a barrier-free environment in government offices, ensuring a conducive and accessible workplace for disabled employees.
The Minister reiterated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government remains steadfastly committed to the welfare and rights of disabled individuals. Continuous efforts are being made to provide comprehensive facilities to disabled employees in government service.
Dr. Baljit Kaur added that this decision will boost the morale of disabled employees in government services and strengthen the protection of their rights, fostering a more inclusive and supportive work environment.
