Significant Upgrades in Power Sector
Under the visionary leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has made substantial strides in strengthening and expanding the power infrastructure across the state. The North Zone, encompassing Jalandhar, has witnessed significant improvements in power supply, capacity enhancement, and infrastructure development during the fiscal year 2024-25.
Infrastructure Details in North Zone
Power Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO announced that the North Zone supplies electricity to four districts: Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, and Jalandhar. To ensure efficient power distribution, the zone is equipped with:
- Two 400 kV substations, 15 220 kV substations, and 19 132 kV substations.
- 128 substations of 66 kV with a cumulative capacity of 3886.5 MVA.
- 179 lines of 66 kV covering 1555.091 circuit kilometers (ckt km) and three 33 kV lines spanning 2.7 ckt km, all maintained by the zone.
Power Supply and Network Expansion
In 2024-25, the North Zone provided electricity to 22,42,638 consumers through 2059 11 kV feeders. To enhance reliability and address overloading, 57 feeders were de-loaded. The High Tension (HT) network under the General Electrical Network (GEN) now spans 36,196.45 km, an increase of 313.83 km compared to 2023-24. Additionally, 1,58,043 transformers with a total capacity of 6427.174 MVA have been installed, marking an addition of 3020 distribution transformers with 177.64 MVA capacity over the previous year. The Low Tension (LT) network has expanded to 29,686.31 km, ensuring seamless power access to remote areas.

Substation Upgrades
To further strengthen the power distribution network, upgrades were carried out across various 66 kV substations:
- Two transformers’ capacity was increased from 6.3/8.0 MVA to 12.5 MVA.
- Four transformers were upgraded from 10/12.5 MVA to 20 MVA.
- Eleven transformers’ capacity was enhanced from 20 MVA to 31.5 MVA.
- A new 66 kV substation was constructed to bolster the network.
Investments Under RDSS Scheme
Under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), Rs 844.81 crore has been allocated for the North Zone. This includes:
- 109 bi-connections for 11 kV feeders.
- 150 cabling projects.
- Upgrading 150 high-capacity conductors.
- 182 new transformers to enhance distribution capacity.
- Construction of four new substations and 21 new distribution lines.
Impact on Power Supply Quality
Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO emphasized that these initiatives are expected to significantly improve the quality and reliability of power supply while reducing incidents of tripping and outages. “The upgrades and expansions in the North Zone reflect our commitment to providing uninterrupted and efficient power to all consumers, supporting both urban and rural development,” he stated.
