In a bold step toward transforming education, the Punjab Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has approved amendments to the Punjab Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Rules, 2011. - Revamped School Management Committees (SMCs): The membership of SMCs will increase from 12 to 16. Of these, 12 will be parents of students, while the remaining four will bring expertise from fields like education, sports, and extracurricular activities. - Relieving Jail Overcrowding: An amendment to the Transfer of Prisoner Act 1950 now permits the transfer of under-trial prisoners between states. This process, requiring consent from both states and trial court approval, promises to ease the pressure on Punjab’s packed jails.
- Empowering Social Services: New rules for Group A of the Social Security, Women and Child Development Department have been approved. These changes will streamline operations, delivering greater benefits to the state’s most vulnerable communities.
- Boosting Tourism and Heritage: The Cabinet finalized the terms and conditions for appointing the Chairman and Members of the Punjab Tirath Yatra Samiti, alongside the Advisor to the Punjab Heritage and Tourism Promotion Board, paving the way for growth in these vital sectors.
These decisions, made during a Council of Ministers meeting at the Chief Minister’s office in Punjab Civil Secretariat I, reflect the Mann administration’s dedication to tackling education, social welfare, and infrastructure challenges head-on.
