Punjab Child Rights Commission Seeks Reports from Patiala DC and SSP on Recent Road Accident

Chandigarh, May 8:

The Punjab State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has called for detailed reports from the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Patiala concerning a recent tragic road accident in the district.

Commission Chairperson Kanwarjit Singh stated that the Commission has taken suo-moto cognizance of the incident, in which seven students and a driver lost their lives, and several others were injured in a devastating collision between a school vehicle and a tipper truck.

The Commission has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Patiala to ensure that all necessary medical treatment is provided to the injured children. Additionally, the Regional Transport Officer has been instructed to conduct thorough inspections of overloaded tippers and vehicles on the roads. The Commission has also mandated inspections of vehicles belonging to the affected school and all other schools in the district, with strict action to be taken against school vehicle drivers and institutions if vehicles fail to meet prescribed safety standards.

Similarly, the SSP Patiala has been directed to investigate the tipper involved in the accident, including the driver’s license, the vehicle’s documentation (valid RC, fitness certificate), and compliance with government mining policies regarding road usage and overloading. Appropriate action must be taken against the tipper owner as per regulations.

The Commission has requested action reports from both the Deputy Commissioner and SSP of Patiala by May 11, 2025.
