Punjab Jails Minister Distributes Appointment Letters to 12 New Prison Officials

Punjab Jails Minister  Laljit Singh Bhullar handed over appointment letters to 12 newly recruited prison officials during a formal ceremony at his office in Punjab Civil Secretariat, Chandigarh. Accompanied by MLA Atam Nagar Ludhiana,  Kulwant Singh Sidhu, and  Arun Pal Singh, ADGP Prisons, the minister highlighted the Mann government’s commitment to historic regular recruitments in the jail department.

New Appointments

The newly inducted officials include:

  • 5 JBT Teachers: Tasked with educating prisoners and their children to support rehabilitation and societal reintegration.

  • 3 Clerks

  • 1 Warder

  • 3 Group-D Officials

Minister’s Address

 Laljit Singh Bhullar emphasized that these appointments are part of Chief Minister Bhagwanth Mann’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the jail department through regular recruitments, a significant shift from past practices. He noted that the JBT teachers will play a pivotal role in educating prisoners and their children, aiding their reintegration into mainstream society. The minister also outlined the government’s initiatives to modernize jail infrastructure and enhance services, including educational, vocational, and welfare programs.

Congratulating the new recruits, Bhullar urged them to serve with zeal, enthusiasm, and dedication. He highlighted that in January 2025, 15 JBT teachers were appointed through regular recruitment, marking a first in the department’s history, as such positions were previously filled temporarily. “Under CM Mann’s leadership, we have made regular recruitments for the first time in three decades,” he said.

Ongoing Recruitment Efforts

Bhullar provided updates on the department’s recruitment drives:

  • Completed Recruitment: 738 warders and 25 matrons have already joined their duties.

  • Nearing Completion: Recruitment for 179 guarding staff posts, including 175 warders and 4 matrons.

  • Future Plans: 1,220 posts across various cadres in the jail department are being revived, with the recruitment process set to begin soon.

Educational and Skill Development Initiatives

The minister highlighted the department’s Sikhya Daat Project, under which approximately 2,200 prisoners are enrolled in educational courses. Additionally, 513 prisoners are undergoing skill development training through the Punjab Skill Development Mission, including courses in electrician work, plumbing, and tailoring, to enhance employability and rehabilitation.

Broader Government Achievements

Reflecting on the Punjab Government’s broader achievements, Bhullar noted that under CM Mann’s leadership, the state has provided around 55,000 regular government jobs. He emphasized the government’s vision to curb brain drain by transforming youth into job creators rather than job seekers, aligning with Mann’s transformative agenda.
