Punjab Police Arrests Travel Agent in Patiala Over US Deportation Scam

CHANDIGARH, February 15

In a major breakthrough in the crackdown against fraudulent immigration consultants, the NRI Affairs wing of the Punjab Police has arrested a travel agent named Anil Batra , one of four accused linked to an illegal immigration scam. This development follows the registration of 10 First Information Reports (FIRs) by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) against travel agents who allegedly duped individuals with false promises of facilitating illegal entry into the United States, leading to their eventual deportation.

The SIT, constituted by Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav , is tasked with investigating complaints against unscrupulous travel agents involved in deceptive immigration practices. The team has been urging deported individuals to come forward and assist in holding those violating the law accountable.

Arrest Details

Acting on the directives of the SIT, headed by ADGP NRI Affairs Praveen Sinha , a team led by Inspector Abhey Singh Chauhan , SHO of NRI Police Station, Patiala, arrested Anil Batra from his in-laws’ residence in Patiala (5-E Partap Nagar) . The operation was carried out under the close supervision of SP NRI Affairs Patiala, Gurbans Singh Bains .

Anil Batra, a resident of Shanti Nagar, Teka Market, Thanesar, Kurukshetra, Haryana , is named in FIR No. 06, dated February 8, 2025 , under Sections 406, 420, 370, and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) , as well as Section 24 of the Emigration Act . He is accused of orchestrating illegal immigration by arranging visas for countries like Suriname and providing air tickets to victims.

Once in Suriname, the victims reportedly traveled overland through South American nations such as Brazil or Colombia , crossed into Central America via countries like Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico , and eventually entered the United States illegally with the help of human traffickers and smugglers.

As part of the investigation, Anil Batra’s bank account has been frozen, with a balance of Rs 6.35 lakhs as of February 14, 2025.

DGP’s Commitment to Combating Fraudulent Networks

DGP Gaurav Yadav reiterated Punjab Police’s resolve to dismantle criminal networks exploiting vulnerable individuals seeking immigration opportunities. He urged the public to report any information that could aid in apprehending offenders against whom cases have been registered.

The DGP also advised citizens to exercise caution and only approach licensed immigration agents , ensuring their credentials are thoroughly verified before engaging their services. This advisory aims to prevent individuals from falling prey to scams that not only result in financial losses but also lead to legal consequences, including deportation.
