The Punjab Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) has launched a major crackdown on fraudulent immigration consultants following the recent deportation of Indian citizens from the United States. The SIT is targeting the multinational human trafficking network operating in the region.
Based on complaints from the deportees who landed in Amritsar, the Punjab Police has registered eight First Information Reports (FIRs) against travel agents who allegedly defrauded them with false promises of illegal entry into the United States. Two FIRs were filed with the district police, and six were registered with the NRI Affairs Wing of the Punjab Police.

The SIT, headed by ADGP NRI Affairs Praveen Sinha, and comprising ADGP Internal Security Shive Kumar Verma, IGP Provisioning Dr. S Boopathi, and DIG Border Range Satinder Singh, is overseeing the investigation to ensure its effectiveness. Senior police officials have met with the returnees to address their concerns and assure them of legal recourse. Commissioners of Police and Senior Superintendents of Police from various districts are working with the SIT to bring the perpetrators to justice.
DGP Gaurav Yadav reiterated the Punjab Police’s determination to dismantle fraudulent immigration networks and stop the exploitation of vulnerable individuals. He emphasized the SIT’s commitment to holding those responsible for illegal human trafficking accountable.
