CHANDIGARH/TARN TARAN, April 21,
In a significant breakthrough in the mission to make Punjab safe, as mandated by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) and Tarn Taran Police jointly arrested Sukhbir Singh alias Sukh, the prime suspect in the murder of Sarpanch Bachittar Singh alias Bikkar. The announcement was made by Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Monday.
Sukhbir Singh, a resident of Barwala in Tarn Taran, is a habitual offender with multiple cases under the NDPS Act, Arms Act, and snatching charges. The murder took place on September 12, 2024, when Sarpanch Bachittar Singh was shot dead by two assailants on a motorcycle in Naushera Pannuan village.
Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Promod Ban revealed that AGTF teams, supervised by AIG Sandeep Goel, and Tarn Taran Police, led by SSP Abhimanyu Rana, tracked the suspect using intelligence inputs and apprehended him near Gurdwara Sahib in Pahuwind village. A black Hero Splendor motorcycle used by the accused was also seized.‘

SSP Abhimanyu Rana stated that Sukhbir played a key role in planning the murder and conducting reconnaissance on the victim. With his arrest, seven of the eight accused in the case have been detained, and efforts are ongoing to capture the remaining suspect.
A case has been registered under sections 103 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and section 25 of the Arms Act at Sarhali Police Station (FIR No. 119, dated September 13, 2024). Further investigations are underway to uncover the full extent of the criminal network.
