In a major blow to trans-border smuggling, the Punjab Police have successfully dismantled a Pakistan-backed drug smuggling racket. Two individuals, Gurmukh Singh and Jagwant Singh, both residents of Tarn Taran, have been arrested in connection with this case.
The police recovered 7 kilograms of heroin, five pistols (including four 9MM Glock pistols and one .32 bore pistol), five live cartridges, five magazines, and a Swift Dzire car (PB 38 D 1759) from the accused.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team from Amritsar Rural intercepted the suspects near Muhawa village in Gharinda. Upon searching their vehicle, the police recovered the five pistols and ammunition. During subsequent interrogation, the accused revealed the location of the concealed heroin, leading to the recovery of the 7 kg stash.

According to DGP Gaurav Yadav, preliminary investigations indicate that the arrested individuals had direct links with Pakistan-based smugglers. They were allegedly involved in smuggling weapons and drugs into Punjab via drones.
SSP Amritsar Rural Satinder Singh stated that further investigations are underway to identify the Pakistan-based smuggler and the intended recipients of the weapons. The police will also initiate proceedings to seize the illegally acquired property of the arrested smugglers under the NDPS Act.
A case has been registered under the Arms Act and the NDPS Act at Gharinda Police Station (FIR no. 170 dated 16/7/2024).
