Punjab Seeks Over Rs 9,000 Crore for Urban Uplift

Chandigarh, 22 July

The Punjab government has submitted a substantial proposal to the 16th Finance Commission, seeking a substantial allocation of Rs 9,426.49 crore for bolstering urban infrastructure and amenities across the state.

The Department of Local Government presented a detailed plan outlining the need for funds to upgrade critical urban services, including fire safety, stormwater management, sewerage systems, sustainable transportation, and capacity building through the State Institute of Urban Affairs.

The state government highlighted the rapid pace of urbanization in Punjab and emphasized the need for substantial investment to improve the quality of life for urban residents. It also showcased its achievements under the 15th Finance Commission and outlined its vision for future development.

Local representatives, including MLA Ajitpal Singh Kohli, also participated in the presentation, emphasizing the critical need for increased funding to address the challenges faced by urban areas.

The state government is optimistic about a positive response from the Finance Commission, which would enable Punjab to significantly enhance its urban landscape.
