Chandigarh, July 24:

The Chairperson of the Punjab State Women Commission, Mrs. Raj Lali Gill, has voiced strong criticism of the Union Budget 2024 presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. At a press conference held in Chandigarh on Wednesday, Mrs. Gill expressed her disappointment, stating that the budget fails to provide meaningful support for women’s empowerment.

Mrs. Gill highlighted that the budget neglects the essential needs of women, offering no specific programs or financial allocations dedicated to their empowerment. She emphasized the expectation for initiatives aimed at improving women’s economic, social, and health conditions, which were notably absent in the budget.

“The promises made in this budget are merely for show,” Mrs. Gill asserted. “By the time they are implemented, another budget will be here.”

She further criticized the budget for not increasing funding for One Stop Centres, which are crucial for supporting women victims of violence. This oversight, she argued, underscores the government’s apparent disregard for women’s safety and well-being.

Regarding the government’s claim of creating 2 crore jobs annually, Mrs. Gill questioned the lack of concrete measures in the budget to substantiate this claim. She labeled the budget as a “party-saving” exercise.

Mrs. Gill called on the central government to revisit the budget and include measures that genuinely empower women and address their specific challenges. She advocated for substantial allocations towards women’s education, healthcare, and entrepreneurship to ensure their active participation in the nation’s development.
