Punjab to Install 663 More Agri-Solar Pumps in 120 Days

Chandigarh, January 7

Punjab will install an additional 663 solar water pumps for agricultural use within the next 120 days, announced New and Renewable Energy Sources Minister Aman Arora. This initiative aims to further promote the use of natural energy and decarbonize the state’s agricultural sector.

On Tuesday, Arora handed over a work order to M/s. AVI Renewables Energy Pvt. Ltd. for the installation of these 663 pumps. He also noted that a work order for 2,356 solar pumps had already been issued last month.

Arora directed PEDA (Punjab Energy Development Agency) officials to prioritize achieving the target of installing 20,000 agricultural solar pumps across the state for the benefit of farmers.

The selected company, M/s. AVI Renewables Energy Pvt. Ltd., was chosen through a transparent and competitive bidding process. The solar pumps, available in capacities of 3, 5, 7.5, and 10 HP, come with significant subsidies: 60% for general category farmers and 80% for Scheduled Caste (SC) farmers. In designated “dark zones” (areas with over-exploited groundwater), these pumps will be prioritized for farmers who have already implemented micro-irrigation systems like drip or sprinkler systems on their borewells.

Arora emphasized the multiple benefits of these solar pumps, including reduced fuel costs, zero carbon emissions, and the promotion of sustainable farming practices. He also highlighted the added convenience for farmers, who will no longer need to irrigate their fields at night, as these pumps operate during daylight hours.

Director PEDA M.P. Singh, Joint Director Rajesh Bansal, and representatives from M/s. AVI Renewables Energy Pvt. Ltd. were also present at the work order handover.
