Zero Tolerance for Corruption in Punjab
Reinforcing the Punjab government’s zero-tolerance policy against corruption under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested Sukhdev Vashisht, an Assistant Town Planner (ATP) with the Municipal Corporation (MC) in Jalandhar, on May 15, 2025, for demanding a bribe of Rs 30,000.
Details of the Case
A VB spokesperson revealed that Vashisht’s arrest followed multiple complaints from stakeholders. The complainants accused the ATP of deliberately delaying file approvals and extorting money from applicants. Despite 70% of building maps in the area already being approved by the MC, Vashisht allegedly refused to clear certain files unless bribes were paid. The complainants reported that he demanded Rs 30,000 to process their case and resorted to threats, including sealing buildings during inspections, to intimidate applicants. Vashisht reportedly claimed he was unafraid of being transferred, further emboldening his actions.
Swift Action by Vigilance Bureau
Following a preliminary investigation into the complaints, the VB Jalandhar Range registered a case against Vashisht under the Prevention of Corruption Act and took him into custody. The spokesperson stated that further investigations are underway to uncover the full extent of his corrupt practices.
