Chandigarh, March 31
In a resolute step against corruption, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) apprehended Sub-Inspector (SI) Raman Kumar, the Station House Officer (SHO) at Police Station Bulowal in Hoshiarpur district, and his subordinate, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Gurdeep Singh, on Sunday, March 30, 2025. The officers were arrested for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 1,50,000.
According to an official VB spokesperson, the arrests stemmed from an investigation triggered by an online complaint lodged by a resident of Asalpur village, Hoshiarpur district, through the Chief Minister’s Anti-Corruption Action Line. The complainant reported that an FIR had been filed against his nephew under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the Bulowal police station. He alleged that the accused officers threatened to implicate his son in the same case under Section 29 of the NDPS Act unless a bribe was paid.
The complaint detailed that ASI Gurdeep Singh initially demanded Rs 1,50,000 on behalf of SHO Raman Kumar to prevent the son’s involvement. Following negotiations, the amount was reduced to Rs 1 lakh. The complainant recorded these bribe demands and submitted the audio evidence to the Vigilance Bureau.

After the VB’s Hoshiarpur unit verified the complaint and sought legal counsel, a case was registered against both officers. The charges include:
- Sections 7 and 7A of the Prevention of Corruption Act,
- Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS),
- Section 59 of the NDPS Act.
The case was filed at the VB Police Station in Jalandhar Range. Both accused are now in custody and are scheduled to appear before the competent court on Tuesday, April 1, 2025. Harpreet Singh Mander, Senior Superintendent of Police, Vigilance Bureau Jalandhar Range, stated, “Both accused have been arrested and would be produced before the competent court tomorrow. Further investigation is underway.”
