Punjab Vigilance Bureau Nabs PUNBUS Superintendent for Taking Rs 20,000 Bribe

Chandigarh, May 22

In its ongoing crackdown on corruption, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested Jagjivan Singh, a Superintendent at the Director, State Transport-cum-MD PUNBUS office in Sector 17, Chandigarh, for demanding and accepting a Rs 20,000 bribe.

A VB spokesperson revealed that the arrest followed a complaint by a private transporter from Dharar village, Amritsar district. The complainant alleged that Jagjivan Singh demanded Rs 5,000 per bus—totaling Rs 20,000—to release a Rs 2 lakh security deposit. The deposit related to four buses leased to PUNBUS under a kilometer scheme from 2014 to 2020. Despite submitting all required documents and obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Amritsar Depot Manager in May 2023, the complainant’s file was delayed for three years under false pretenses. The complainant provided recorded evidence of the bribe demand.

Following a preliminary inquiry, the VB’s flying squad set up a trap and caught Jagjivan Singh red-handed accepting the Rs 20,000 bribe outside his office in the presence of two official witnesses. A case has been registered against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the VB Flying Squad-1 police station in Mohali. Investigations are ongoing to determine if senior officials were involved in the extortion.

The VB reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on corruption and encouraged citizens to report graft via its helpline numbers.
