Punjabi University Celebrates Foundation Day with Inauguration of 10th World Punjabi Literature Conference

Punjabi University, Patiala, celebrated its Foundation Day on April 30, 2025, with the inauguration of the 10th World Punjabi Literature Conference, organized by the Department of Punjabi Literary Studies. Titled Punjabi Literature and Culture: Status and Possibilities, the conference’s opening ceremony featured the Foundation Day address by former Vice-Chancellor Prof. B.S. Ghumman.
In a video message, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Karmjeet Singh delivered the presidential address, emphasizing the university’s rich legacy. “Punjabi University boasts a glorious heritage that fills us all with pride. Every faculty member must fulfill their responsibilities with sincerity to elevate the institution further. Students, too, should recognize the university’s greatness and make the most of its opportunities,” he said.
Prof. B.S. Ghumman, in his address, hailed Punjabi University as a beacon of intellectual and progressive thought. “Few institutions have produced as many scholars as Punjabi University has for Punjab. It is a nursery of forward-thinking ideas and innovative initiatives, where diverse perspectives find equal space,” he remarked. He highlighted the university’s significant contributions to grassroots movements in Punjab and its unwavering support for marginalized communities and women in higher education. Ghumman urged the university to deepen its engagement with emerging fields like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and develop a dedicated AI policy. He also recommended documenting the university’s storied history and creating a vision document for its future.

Prof. Narinder Kaur Multani, Dean of Academic Affairs, delivered the welcome address, detailing the university’s various initiatives. She outlined steps taken to enhance academic and administrative excellence, noting a steady increase in student enrollment in new courses.
The conference’s inaugural session featured Prof. Surinder Dhanjal, Professor Emeritus from Thompson Rivers University, Canada, as the chief guest. Congratulating the university on its Foundation Day, he stressed the importance of a student-centric academic environment, stating, “A university is truly defined by its students.”
The keynote address was delivered by renowned scholar Prof. Tejwant Singh Gill, who reflected on his contributions across various fields, enriching the session with his insights.
Registrar Prof. Sanjeev Puri, in his vote of thanks, shared details about a newly established digitization lab at the university, funded through a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) grant. He explained that the lab would enable the university to leverage advanced digital tools for academic and administrative purposes.
The event was hosted by Dr. Gurmukh Singh, Dean of Alumni, and Dr. Parmeet Kaur, Head of the Department of Punjabi Literary Studies.
Notably, the ceremony also honored three senior former employees of the university— Rajinder Kumar Malhotra, Dr. Ram Murti Goel, and Prof. Kirpal Kazak—for their contributions.
