Punjabi University’s UGC-Malaviya Mission Centre Kicks Off Short-Term Course on Research Methodology and Ethics

Under the visionary leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Jagdeep Singh, the UGC-Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre (MMTTC) at Punjabi University, Patiala, inaugurated a 6-day Short-Term Course on “Research Methodology and Ethics” on August 19, 2025. The online program, running until August 26, 2025, aims to equip faculty members, researchers, and scholars with essential skills for conducting high-quality, systematic, and ethical research.

The course is designed to achieve three key objectives: imparting a robust understanding of research design, tools, and techniques; fostering awareness of ethical research practices, including plagiarism, authorship, data integrity, and academic honesty; and introducing modern methods for data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Organized under the guidelines of the UGC-MHRD, the program is led by Prof. (Dr.) Raman Maini, Director of MMTTC, who welcomed chief guest Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Jagdeep Singh and Guest of Honour Prof. (Dr.) Ritu Lehal, Professor at the School of Management Studies and Dean of Research.

Prof. Maini expressed gratitude to Course Coordinator Prof. (Dr.) Balraj Singh Saini, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Dean of the College Development Council, for his dedicated efforts. He assured participants that the course would feature sessions by distinguished resource persons. “At MMTTC, we believe education is the most powerful tool for meaningful change. This course aims to build a community of researchers who are well-prepared and committed to quality teaching and research,” said Prof. Maini. He emphasized that research is a responsibility, not just a pursuit of knowledge, and that methodology and ethics are the pillars of credible scholarship, providing structure, clarity, and societal value.

Chief Guest Prof. (Dr.) Jagdeep Singh highlighted that research methodology and ethics are fundamental to impactful research. He stressed the importance of scientific methods, systematic approaches, and critical thinking in producing research that benefits society. “True research is about innovation, responsibility, honesty, and accountability,” he said, commending MMTTC for organizing the program.

Guest of Honour Prof. (Dr.) Ritu Lehal underscored that research methodology is the backbone of scholarly work, ensuring credible and replicable outcomes. She emphasized that ethical research enhances institutional credibility and contributes to societal progress.

Course Coordinator Prof. (Dr.) Balraj Singh Saini encouraged participants to adopt interdisciplinary and innovative approaches, aligning their research with societal needs and global challenges. He urged young scholars to prioritize originality and authenticity to elevate Indian academia’s global standing.

Course Co-Coordinator Dr. Abhinav Bhandari, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering, introduced the course themes, including Research Design, Data Analysis, Plagiarism Checks, Publication Ethics, and Emerging Digital Resources for scholars. He encouraged active participation and concluded the inaugural session with a vote of thanks.

In his closing remarks, Prof. Maini extended gratitude to the dedicated staff, including Dr. Mandeep Singh, Mr. Dyal Dutt, Mr. Surinder Singh, Mrs. Kanta Rani, Mr. Mahaveer Singh, and Mr. Surinder Kumar, for their exemplary organizational contributions to the online course.
