Punjab’s Agricultural Economy Can Thrive by Empowering Farmers as Entrepreneurs: Rana Gurjeet

Congress MLA from Kapurthala and former minister Rana Gurjeet Singh stated today that transforming Punjab’s farmers into entrepreneurs is essential to stabilize and bolster their economic status. He emphasized that the state’s economy hinges on the financial well-being of its farming community, making it imperative to uplift their economic condition.
Rana Gurjeet Singh urged both the Punjab and central governments to move beyond confining farmers to traditional agriculture. He advocated for broadening their economic outlook, with a special focus on food processing and value addition, to restore Punjab’s path to prosperity.
He called for the government to provide training to farmers, enabling them to add value to their food grains and other crops. The MLA argued that simply raising the Minimum Support Price (MSP) is insufficient for farmers’ welfare, as it fails to offset the escalating costs of farming inputs like machinery, seeds, fertilizers, and water. These rising expenses are shrinking farmers’ incomes and increasing their debt burdens.

Rana highlighted that shrinking land holdings, divided over generations, have left many farmers with smaller plots, making it challenging to sustain livelihoods through farming alone. He revealed that he has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, proposing a strategic plan to guide Punjab’s farmers toward industrial and commercial mindsets.
