RGNUL Convention on Cherishing the Values of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar

The School of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies (SSSIS) at Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Punjab, hosted a convention titled “Cherishing the Values of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar” to commemorate Ambedkar Jayanti. The event was attended by Prof. (Dr.) Jai Shankar Singh, Vice-Chancellor; Dr. Ivneet Walia, Registrar (Officiating); Prof. (Dr.) Kamaljeet Kaur, Dean of Research and Student Welfare; Dr. Jasleen Kewlani, SSSIS Coordinator; and Dr. Gautam Sood, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Social Anthropology at Punjabi University, Patiala, and Coordinator of the Punjab Institute of Social Impact Assessment, who served as the Guest of Honor and Speaker. The gathering included faculty, non-teaching staff, workers, guards, gardeners, department heads, and students from B.A. LL.B., LL.M., and Ph.D. programs.

The convention celebrated the enduring legacy of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and a champion of social justice, equality, and human dignity. It aimed to foster inclusivity, encouraging participants to reflect on and honor Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions. In his keynote address, Dr. Gautam Sood highlighted Dr. Ambedkar’s transformative role in modern India, emphasizing his fight against social discrimination and advocacy for marginalized communities. He stated, “Dr. B.R. Ambedkar stood against powerful forces of injustice, dismantling the hierarchical structure of society to lay the foundation for equity, equality, and justice.” Dr. Jasleen Kewlani urged the audience to strengthen societal commitment to social justice and multidimensional equality.

An open session invited the RGNUL community to share their perspectives on Dr. Ambedkar’s values and their relevance today. Faculty, staff, and students actively participated, discussing the significance of his ideals in legal education and social change. The event underscored Dr. Ambedkar’s lifelong dedication to eradicating inequities and promoting liberty, equality, and fraternity, aligning with RGNUL’s mission to nurture these principles.

A highlight of the convention was the Vice-Chancellor’s invitation to both teaching and non-teaching staff to share their views from the dais, reflecting a truly democratic celebration of Dr. Ambedkar’s Jayanti. The event, attended by nearly 200 people, concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Ivneet Walia, who remarked, “God made everyone equal, and we should not interfere with His will.” She praised the enthusiastic participation of the RGNUL community.

The convention successfully inspired attendees to uphold Dr. Ambedkar’s values in their personal and professional lives, reinforcing RGNUL’s commitment to fostering a just and inclusive society.
