Chandigarh, June 18
The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), as part of its ongoing anti-corruption drive in the state, has arrested Sub-Inspector Amandeep Singh, posted with the Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF) in Jalandhar, while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1,00,000.
Disclosing this here on Thursday, an official spokesperson of the Vigilance Bureau said the accused was arrested following a complaint filed by a resident of village Gohawar under Goraya Police Station in Jalandhar district.
According to the complainant, an NDPS case had been registered against her brother, and SI Amandeep Singh had allegedly been threatening to implicate other members of her family and initiate proceedings against their properties. She further alleged that the accused had already extorted Rs 6.5 lakh from her on different occasions and was demanding an additional Rs 2 lakh to spare her sister-in-law from being named in the case. The complainant had also recorded the conversation in which the bribe was allegedly demanded.

Unwilling to pay the remaining amount, the complainant approached the Vigilance Bureau’s Kapurthala unit. Acting swiftly on the complaint, the VB team laid a trap and caught the accused SI red-handed while accepting Rs 1,00,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses.
The spokesperson said that during the operation, Constable Maninder Singh, who was accompanying the accused SI, fled from the spot along with the vehicle. However, the tainted currency notes were recovered from his possession.
A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at the Vigilance Bureau Police Station, Jalandhar. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
