Sawan Barwal Sets Meet Record, Qualifies for Asian Athletics Championships at National Games 2025

Uttarakhand/Patiala, 09 February (Sports Desk)

Long-distance runner Sawan Barwal secured gold in the men’s 10,000m race at the National Games 2025 in Uttarakhand on Saturday, also qualifying for the Asian Athletics Championships.

Barwal set a new National Games record with a time of 28:49.93, comfortably surpassing the Asian Athletics Championships 2025 qualifying mark of 29:33.26.

The Asian Athletics Championships 2025 will be held in Gumi, South Korea, from May 27-31. The previous edition of this biennial event took place in Bangkok, Thailand, in 2023.

Kiran Matre, who finished second with a time of 29:04.76, also met the Asian Championships qualifying standard. Vinod Singh won the bronze medal with a time of 29:43.60.

Barwal’s gold-medal-winning performance also improved his personal best time of 28:51.88, which he had set at the Night of the 10000m PBs in London in May 2024. However, he remains short of Gulveer Singh’s national record of 27:14.88, set at the Hachioji Long Distance 2024 athletics meet.

In other events, Odisha’s Animesh Kujur won gold in the men’s 100m, equalling the National Games record with a time of 10.28 seconds. Pranav Gurav of Maharashtra finished second (10.32 seconds), and Amlan Borgohain of Assam finished third (10.43 seconds).

The National Games 2025, which started on January 28, will run until February 14.
