Six Additional Sectoral Committees Established to Boost Industrial Policy in Punjab

-Ashok Arora of LT Foods (Dawat Rice) and A.S. Mittal of International Tractors Ltd Named Among Committee Chairpersons

Continuing its efforts to enhance Punjab’s industrial policy and streamline the ease of doing business, Punjab Cabinet Minister  Sanjeev Arora announced the formation of six new sectoral committees on Saturday. The announcement was made during a press conference at Bachat Bhawan, District Administrative Complex, Ludhiana.

The newly appointed committee chairpersons include: Rajesh Kharbanda (Sports Goods Manufacturing and Exporters Association & MD, Nivia Sports, Jalandhar) for the Sports/Leather Goods Committee, Ashwani Kumar (President, FIEO India, Victor Forgings, Jalandhar) for the Machine/Hand Tools Committee, Ashok Arora (LT Foods, Dawat Rice) for the Food Processing & Dairy Committee, Gurjinder Singh (Best Western Hotels) for the Tourism & Hospitality Committee, A.S. Mittal (International Tractors Ltd, Hoshiarpur) for the Heavy Machinery Committee, and Naresh Tiwari (Plywood Manufacturing Industries Association & MD, Virgo Panels, Hoshiarpur) for the Furniture & Ply Industry Committee.

These committees, comprising experts from various industrial sectors, will act as think tanks to propose tailored policy recommendations. The focus areas include Sports/Leather Goods, Machine/Hand Tools, Food Processing & Dairy, Tourism & Hospitality, Heavy Machinery, and Furniture & Ply Industry.

Shri Sanjeev Arora emphasized that the primary role of these committees is to provide the government with a structured set of suggestions for a customized industrial policy framework, aligned with Punjab’s unique industrial ecosystem, structural dynamics, and fiscal considerations. The committees are tasked with studying policies from other states across India to develop a ‘best-in-class’ framework for Punjab. Recommendations are to be submitted in writing by October 1, 2025.

Each committee will be led by a Chairperson, supported by industry members. The government may add more members as needed, ensuring diversity in size, scale, geography, and sub-segments for comprehensive discussions.

Secretarial support will be provided by the Member-Secretary of each committee, who will also coordinate meetings and prepare minutes. The General Manager of the District Industries Centre (GM DIC) from the Department of Industries & Commerce, along with the relevant Sector Officer from the Punjab Bureau of Investment Promotion (PBIP), will offer administrative assistance as required.

Previously, three committees—Spinning and Weaving, Apparels, and Dyeing and Finishing Units—were established.
