South Africa pulled off a sensational upset in Dubai, defeating defending champions Australia by eight wickets to book their place in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 final.
Clinical Batting Secures Victory
After restricting Australia to a modest 134/5, South Africa’s top order chased down the target with ease. Captain Laura Wolvaardt led the way with a composed 42 runs, while opener Tazmin Brits provided a quickfire 15.
Bosch Steals the Show
However, it was Anneke Bosch who truly dominated the chase. Her unbeaten knock of 74 runs from just 48 balls took the game away from Australia. Bosch smashed boundaries at will, including a six, to finish as Player of the Match. Her steady partnership with Wolvaardt put South Africa firmly in control.

Australia’s Woes
Earlier, Australia struggled after electing to bat first. Openers Beth Mooney and Meg Lanning fell cheaply, leaving the middle order with a rebuilding job. Although Mooney (34) and Tahlia McGrath (27) provided some stability, the team could only manage 134 runs, a total that proved insufficient against a determined South African batting line-up.
Looking Ahead
South Africa will now face the winner of the second semi-final between New Zealand and West Indies for a chance at the World Cup title. This victory marks a historic moment for the Proteas, marking their second consecutive T20 World Cup final appearance. Australia’s dream of a fourth successive title is shattered, leaving them to regroup for future challenges.
