Top Cop Appointed: G. Nageswara Rao Leads Punjab Vigilance

Chandigarh, February 17

The Punjab Government has appointed G. Nageswara Rao , a 1995-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, as the new Chief Director of the Vigilance Bureau . Prior to this assignment, Rao was serving as the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Provisioning in Punjab.

As per information shared by the spokesperson of the Vigilance Bureau, Rao will take over the responsibilities from Special Director General of Police (SDGP) Varinder Kumar , a 1993-batch IPS officer, who has been relieved from his role as Chief Director of the Vigilance Bureau. Varinder Kumar will now report to the Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab , in Chandigarh for further duties.

G. Nageswara Rao brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served in several key positions throughout his career. His notable assignments include:

  • Special Principal Secretary , Department of Home Affairs and Justice, Punjab
  • Director of the Vigilance Bureau , Punjab
  • Deputy Inspector General/Head of Branch (DIG/HoB) , Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), Visakhapatnam
  • DIG/HoB , CBI, ACB, Chennai

A distinguished civil engineering graduate, Rao has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards for his exemplary service:

  • United Nations Medal (2004) for his role as a CIVPOL officer in the United Nations Mission in Kosovo.
  • Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2011) during his deputation with the CBI, awarded on Republic Day.
  • President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2023), also conferred on Republic Day.

With his extensive experience in anti-corruption initiatives and administrative leadership, G. Nageswara Rao is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening the functioning of the Vigilance Bureau and ensuring transparency and accountability in governance across Punjab.

This appointment reflects the Punjab Government’s commitment to combat corruption and uphold the highest standards of integrity within the state’s administrative framework.
