University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University Triumphs at 7th Surana & Surana and RGNUL International Law Moot Court Competition 2024-25

The 7th Surana & Surana and RGNUL International Law Moot Court Competition concluded successfully on March 28-29, 2025, hosted by Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Punjab, in partnership with Surana & Surana International Attorneys, Chennai. The two-day event saw 28 teams from prestigious institutions across India, including NALSAR Hyderabad, NUJS Kolkata, NLU Jodhpur, UILS Chandigarh, and the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, compete fiercely.

On March 28, the semi-final rounds featured teams from Faculty of Law, Delhi University; Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur; University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS), Panjab University; and National Law University, Jodhpur. These rounds were judged by eminent advocates from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, including Manvir Singh Tiwana and Paramvir Singh, alongside seasoned academics Dr. Gurmanpreet Kaur and Dr. Jaspreet Kaur Majithia. The finals on March 29 pitted Faculty of Law, Delhi University, against UILS, Panjab University, with UILS emerging as the champions.

Individual accolades included the Best Speaker award for the preliminary rounds, won by S R Aaditya from NUJS Kolkata, and the Best Speaker in the finals, awarded to Vanya Monga from UILS, Panjab University. The Best Memorial prize went to the National University of Advanced Legal Studies, Kochi. The competition showcased the dedication of RGNUL’s student community, supported by the Moot Court Committee under Faculty Coordinator Dr. Jaswinder Kaur.

The final rounds were graced by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Ajit Kumar, Judge, Allahabad High Court, as Chief Guest, alongside Prof. (Dr.) A. David Ambrose, former Professor at the University of Madras, and Prof. (Dr.) Satish Chandra, Visiting Professor at RGNUL. Justice Ajit Kumar praised the participants, noting, “The confidence shown by the teams resembled the true mark of a lawyer in making,” and emphasized a global familial responsibility, stating, “Earth is a family and everyone must have a concern for this family.” Prof. Ambrose urged students to explore careers in international law, while Prof. Chandra shared insights from his own mooting days, highlighting its formative value. Mr. Pritam Surana, Partner at Surana & Surana, announced the results.

At the valedictory ceremony, RGNUL Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Jai S. Singh welcomed the judges and inspired participants, saying, “We are all winners in the game.” Prof. (Dr.) Naresh Vats, Dean Academics, delivered a vote of thanks, acknowledging Surana & Surana International Attorneys for their vital sponsorship. The Moot Court Committee and student members were also commended for their efforts in ensuring the event’s success.
