The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) thwarted a bribery attempt in Barnala district on Monday. A private citizen, Parveen Kumar, was arrested while accepting a bribe of Rs. 1,50,000.
According to a spokesperson for the VB, Kumar had initially filed a complaint against Mohinder Singh of Barnala city through the Chief Minister’s Anti-Corruption Action Line, alleging that Singh demanded a bribe. However, Kumar then turned the tables and began blackmailing Singh, demanding Rs. 2,50,000 to withdraw the online complaint.

Singh approached the VB, reporting Kumar’s blackmail attempt. He also named Gajju Ram of Bhadalwar village as an accomplice. After investigating Singh’s claims, the VB set a trap and apprehended Kumar while he received Rs. 1,50,000 from the complainant in the presence of official witnesses.
Gajju Ram remains at large. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against both accused at the VB police station in Patiala. Further investigation is ongoing.
