Vigilance Bureau Busts Corruption in Punjab Panchayats

Chandigarh, November 21

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has registered a corruption case against a Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) and an Agricultural Sub-Inspector for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 15 lakh. The accused were involved in the recent Panchayat elections in Ferozepur district.

The Accused:

  • Gulab Singh: Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), Irrigation Department, Ferozepur
  • Davinder Singh: Agricultural Sub-Inspector, Ferozepur

The Allegations:

The complainant, Gurpreet Singh, alleged that the SDO, who was the Returning Officer, and the Agricultural Sub-Inspector, who was the Assistant Returning Officer, demanded a bribe of Rs 10 lakh to clear his nomination papers for the Sarpanch position. They also allegedly collected an additional Rs 5 lakh later.

The Investigation:

The Vigilance Bureau conducted a thorough investigation, including analyzing a recorded conversation between the accused officials. Based on the evidence, a case was registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Arrest and Further Investigation:

The SDO, Gulab Singh, has been arrested, and the VB is actively pursuing the arrest of the Agricultural Sub-Inspector. The investigation is ongoing to uncover any further details and potential involvement of other individuals.
