Chandigarh, June 21
Continuing its crackdown on corruption across the state, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested a woman Sub-Inspector posted at Phillaur Police Station in Jalandhar district for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000.
An official spokesperson of the Vigilance Bureau said that the accused, identified as SI Amandeep Kaur, was apprehended red-handed following a complaint lodged by a resident of Mohalla Choudhrian in Phillaur.
According to the complaint, the complainant’s son had been arrested in a case related to drug pills. It was alleged that the accused officer demanded Rs 20,000 to register the case under a lesser quantity of narcotics so that the accused could obtain bail more easily and also to return his mobile phone. The complainant further stated that she had already paid Rs 1,000 under pressure and had recorded the conversation regarding the alleged bribe demand.

Refusing to pay the illegal gratification, the complainant approached the Vigilance Bureau’s Jalandhar Range and submitted a formal complaint.
After verifying the allegations, the VB team laid a trap and caught the accused SI red-handed while she was allegedly accepting the remaining bribe amount of Rs 20,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses. The tainted currency notes were recovered from her possession.
The spokesperson added that a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at the Vigilance Bureau Police Station, Jalandhar. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
