The Prestige of the Purple Cap
Much like the Orange Cap awarded to the highest run-scorer, the Purple Cap is one of the most coveted individual honors in the WPL. It recognizes the bowler who consistently delivers under pressure and plays a pivotal role in their team’s success.
Past Winners and Memorable Performances
- Hayley Matthews , the West Indies all-rounder, claimed the inaugural Purple Cap in WPL 2023 , finishing with 16 wickets in 10 matches at an impressive economy rate of 5.94 . Her stellar performance, including figures of 3/5 in the final, helped Mumbai Indians lift the trophy. She was also named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.
- In a tight contest, Sophie Ecclestone of UP Warriorz also finished with 16 wickets , but Matthews took the Purple Cap due to her superior economy rate (5.94 vs. 6.62 ).
- In WPL 2024 , Indian spinner Shreyanka Patil claimed the Purple Cap with 13 wickets in eight matches , playing a key role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s title triumph. She narrowly edged out teammates Asha Sobhana and Sophie Molineux , who each had 12 wickets .
Tie-Breaking Rules
In case two or more bowlers finish with the same number of wickets, the economy rate serves as the first tie-breaker. If the economy rates are identical, the bowler with the better strike rate is awarded the Purple Cap.
What Lies Ahead?
With several high-stakes matches still to be played, the race for the Purple Cap remains wide open. Can Georgia Wareham maintain her lead, or will seasoned campaigners like Hayley Matthews and Renuka Singh Thakur overtake her? The coming weeks will determine who emerges as the standout bowler of WPL 2025 .
Stay tuned as the Women’s Premier League continues to deliver thrilling action and celebrate the best of women’s cricket!
