CHANDIGARH, March 18:

On the 18th consecutive day of the “Yudh Nashian Virudh” (War Against Drugs) campaign launched by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to eradicate the drug menace from Punjab, the state police arrested 95 drug smugglers on Tuesday. The operation led to the recovery of 11 kilograms of heroin, 7.5 kilograms of opium, and ₹31,000 in drug money from the accused. With this latest crackdown, the total number of drug smugglers arrested in just 18 days has now reached 2,231.

The operation was carried out under the directives of Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, and spanned all 28 police districts of the state simultaneously.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has tasked Commissioners of Police, Deputy Commissioners, and Senior Superintendents of Police with making Punjab a drug-free state. To oversee progress, the Punjab government has formed a five-member Cabinet Sub-Committee led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema to monitor the anti-drug campaign.

Special DGP Law and Order Arpit Shukla highlighted that Punjab Police’s intensified fight against drugs is gaining momentum, bolstered by significant public support. As part of the “Yudh Nashian Virudh” campaign, Malerkotla Police, in collaboration with the Civil Administration, organized a community outreach meeting at Ferozpur Kothala village in Sandaur Police Station area. During the meeting, representatives from 40 panchayats passed a resolution to collectively combat the drug menace and foster a stronger partnership between the police and the public.

Providing further details, Special DGP Arpit Shukla informed that over 250 police teams, comprising more than 1,600 personnel, conducted raids at 539 locations across the state under the supervision of 97 gazetted officers. The operation resulted in the registration of 61 first information reports (FIRs). Additionally, police teams scrutinized 599 suspicious individuals during the day-long operation.

The Special DGP emphasized the state government’s three-pronged strategy — Enforcement, De-addiction, and Prevention (EDP) — aimed at eradicating the drug menace. Under the ‘De-addiction’ initiative, Punjab Police convinced six individuals to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment. Meanwhile, as part of the ‘Prevention’ drive, 137 awareness events were organized statewide to educate the public about the dangers of drug abuse.
