Chandigarh, May 30
In alignment with the Punjab Government’s zero-tolerance policy against corruption under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested Gursewak Singh, a Chartered Accountant (CA) from Jalandhar, on Friday for accepting a Rs. 10 lakh bribe on behalf of a CGST officer stationed in Jalandhar.
A VB spokesperson revealed that the arrest followed a complaint by a Jalandhar-based firm owner, who alleged that Gursewak Singh demanded Rs. 30 lakh on behalf of the CGST officer to favor his firm in an ongoing enquiry under the CGST Act. After verifying the complaint, the VB’s flying squad set up a trap and caught the CA red-handed accepting Rs. 10 lakh—the first installment of the bribe—in the presence of two official witnesses. The role of the CGST officer is now under investigation based on the CA’s disclosure.
An FIR (No. 17, dated May 30, 2025) has been registered against the accused under Sections 7 and 7A of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 61(2) of the BNS at the VB Police Station, Flying Squad-1, Mohali. The accused will be presented in court tomorrow, and the investigation is ongoing.
