Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, along with thousands of people, paid an emotional farewell to world-renowned marathon runner Fauja Singh during his last rites in his ancestral village of Beas, Jalandhar, on July 20, 2025.
The Chief Minister offered floral tributes to Fauja Singh’s mortal remains and expressed profound grief over the demise of the iconic international marathon runner. Fauja Singh, aged 114, tragically passed away on July 14, 2025, after being struck by a speeding vehicle while crossing a road in his village. Lauding Fauja Singh’s remarkable contributions to sports, Mann stated that his hard work, dedication, and perseverance will continue to inspire young generations to strive for excellence in athletics. He noted that Fauja Singh, the world’s oldest marathon runner, emerged as a symbol of patience and contentment through his unwavering commitment.
Mann emphasized that the sports community will forever remain indebted to Fauja Singh, who defied age to elevate athletics to new heights on the global stage. The Chief Minister remarked that his passing has left the world in mourning, as Fauja Singh was a beacon of dedication and resilience. Through his long-distance running, he brought immense pride to Punjab and the global Sikh community.

The Chief Minister added that Fauja Singh will live on in the hearts and memories of sports enthusiasts, inspiring healthy living. He acknowledged that the void left by this legendary athlete will be difficult to fill in the near future. To honor his monumental contributions, the Punjab government will name the village school after Fauja Singh and install his statues at the village stadium and the Sports College in Jalandhar. Expressing heartfelt condolences to the family, Mann prayed for strength to bear this immense loss and for the departed soul to find eternal peace.
