Punjab Government Increases Stipends for Medical and Dental Interns and Residents: Harpal Cheema

-New Stipend Rates: Interns (Rs 22,000), Junior Residents (Rs 76,000–Rs 78,000), Senior Residents (Rs 92,000–Rs 94,000)

Annual Expenditure to Increase by Rs 33.22 Crore

Highlighting the Aam Aadmi Party-led government’s commitment to strengthening the education and health sectors, Punjab Finance Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema announced a significant hike in monthly stipends for Interns, Junior Residents, and Senior Residents in government medical and dental colleges across the state.

In a press statement, Finance Minister Cheema detailed that Punjab’s government medical and dental colleges currently have 907 sanctioned Intern posts, 1,408 Junior Resident posts, and 754 Senior Resident posts. The stipend for interns has been increased from Rs 15,000 to Rs 22,000 per month. For Junior Residents, the stipend will rise from Rs 67,968 per month to Rs 76,000 in the first year, Rs 77,000 in the second year, and Rs 78,000 in the third year. Similarly, Senior Residents will see their stipends increase from Rs 81,562 per month to Rs 92,000 in the first year, Rs 93,000 in the second year, and Rs 94,000 in the third year.

Cheema emphasized the state government’s focus on allocating substantial resources to the education and health sectors. He noted that the annual expenditure on stipends, currently at Rs 204.96 crore, will rise to Rs 238.18 crore following this revision, resulting in an additional annual cost of Rs 33.22 crore.

The Finance Minister reaffirmed the Punjab government’s dedication to improving healthcare facilities statewide. He highlighted a recent initiative to provide Rs 10 lakh insurance coverage to every citizen, underscoring the government’s commitment to public welfare. Cheema assured that there will be no shortage of funds for the ongoing development and enhancement of Punjab’s healthcare infrastructure and services.
