A VB spokesperson revealed that the arrest followed a complaint from a resident of Chheharta, Amritsar. The complainant reported that Punjab Gramin Bank had classified his property as a non-performing asset due to a defaulted house loan, and the recovery case was assigned to Piplani. The agent allegedly threatened to seize the complainant’s house with police assistance and demanded a Rs. 2,00,000 bribe, purportedly for the Bank Manager, to settle the matter favorably. Piplani had already collected Rs. 50,000 as the first instalment and was pressuring the complainant to pay the remaining Rs. 1,50,000.

Following preliminary verification, the VB set up a trap and caught Piplani red-handed accepting Rs. 50,000 as the second instalment in the presence of two official witnesses. A case has been registered against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the VB Police Station, Amritsar Range. Piplani will be presented in court tomorrow, and further investigation will probe the Bank Manager’s involvement.
